Veronica Felix (Ecuador- Quito, 1975)
Veronica was born in Quito, Ecuador in 1975 and studied Ecology and Tourism at the
Catholic University in Quito Her visits to the countryside inspired her to create
artistic works about nature, color and folklore. It also strengthened her commitment to
protect the environment. She lived in Chicago for five years, in an artistic comunity in
Wicker Park. Here she met some of her mentors and other artists who inspired her. She
also took an Ecology and Art class at the North Western University, where she discovered
the merging of both themes as driving forces in her life.
Later, she moved to Verona, Italy where she had the opportunity to work with the Palazzo
Forti. Veronica trained to teach modern art to children and taught in the whole province
of Verona. It was this rich experience that forged a strong impact on the direction of
her work years later.
Her work in Encaustica consists exclusivly of bees wax - an anciant technique that
melts wax which is applied on a surface. Using natural or mineral pigments, the
technique is totally biodegradable and ecologically friendly. Occasionally she uses
other materials of biodegradable origin, such as wool, paper, petals, etc.
Since Veronica created art that was very textured, it inspired her to work with visually
impaired people. She dedicated art shows to the visually impaired, with great success.
The experience was so profound that it opened a new direction and defined her as an
artist. Veronica decided to make her art not only an environmental statment, but more
importantly a human and community-oriented one.
As an invited guest to the 30th year anniversary of the Institute of Contemporary Art of
San Jose California, she continues working on different projects, some of which now
include film. Currently Veronica has a solo show in a Cultural Center PUCE in Quito,
dedicated to the visually impaired. The show is part of a larger exhibition in
collaboration with the Louvre Museum in Paris.
Veronica lives between Los Gatos, California and Quito, Ecuador and continues developing
projects that involve painting, film, environment and social issues. She is married with
two beautiful children.
